How long does it take to open a French bank account?
4 minutes read
Opening a French bank account is quicker than you think. The time it takes to open your new account will, of course, vary between different banks. However, having the right documentation ready when needed makes the process more efficient.
In this article, we will give you the information to ensure that you can open your French bank account as quickly as possible – and without stress!
Types of French bank account
France has a well-established banking system, offering a variety of different bank accounts to suit client needs:
- Current accounts these can be individual or joint depending on how you want to manage your finances: Compte courant, compte de dépôt, compte non-résident
- Instant access savings accounts: e.g. Livret A
- Fixed or long-term interest: e.g. Dépôt à terme (DAT accounts), Plan Epargne Logement (PEL)
- Stock and equity savings plans: Plan d’épargne en actions (PEA).
Some types of accounts are available only for French residents, though nevertheless there is a good choice of accounts for non-residents, too.
Before applying to open an account, consider carefully what you need your account for. For example, if you are a couple needing an account to buy a second home in France, a joint account is the recommended option and holds many advantages.
What documents do you need to open a French bank account?
You can open a French bank account even if you do not live in France.
All banks follow a step-by-step procedure to ensure they open an account which fits your requirements, enables them to collect the necessary information and to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. Nevertheless, not all banks will allow you to open an account if you are a non-resident and requirements can vary significantly between financial institutions.
If you are a non-resident, you need the following documents:
- Two proofs of ID: Passport & European driving licence; official tax document like P60
- Proof of address: Utility bill less than 3 months; Council Tax bill less than 12 months; or an official tax document less than 12 months.
- Proof of tax status: Where you are fiscally resident, e.g. P60, pension statement, tax code notice.
For French residents:
- Two proofs of ID
- Proof of address
Choosing your bank: in-person or online?
Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. Nowadays, there are not only traditional, in-person ‘bricks and mortar’ banks in France – but an array of online banks too.
- In-person: To open a bank account in-person with a traditional bank, you need to make an appointment, meet with an adviser and sign the paperwork in a physical branch. Appointments generally take around 30 – 60 minutes. The waiting period for document verification and account activations can range from a few days to two weeks, with the debit card and cheque book typically sent by post.
- Online: Online banks manage the entire process digitally via a website or mobile app. Creating your French bank account can take as little as 15 minutes. Once you've created your account profile, you'll need to upload the full documentation for an adviser to check. Many banks will then arrange a phone or online meeting with you to answer any questions and to provide further information about its services. You will need to sign the documents either in-person or online.
Urgent account openings
If you need to open an account urgently – say, for example you have found your dream French home, wish to purchase the property and need a French bank account – many banks can speed up the process. In this type of situation, once you've completed your appointment, the bank can open your account within the day, giving you immediate access to its banking app.
How to activate your French bank account
Activating your French bank account is straightforward.
Once your bank account is open, the bank will send you - the same day - your International Bank Account Number (IBAN). In France, this is known as a Relevé d'identité bancaire (RIB).
The bank will order your card and chequebook the same day, and they will typically arrive at your registered address within 10 days. Access to a banking app is generally immediate.
There are different ways to activate your bank card; one option is to use it at any cashpoint or in a shop using your pin. You can use the account for direct debits, transfers, cheques etc. even before the card is activated.
Can a bank refuse to open a bank account?
Yes, if you are unable to provide the bank with the necessary documents and information, and if you do not meet their eligibility criteria. This criteria includes where you live and some banks may require a certain level of income. However, most banks try to be as flexible as possible as long as you meet their key requirements.
