We love our pets. That is why finding a vet that will take good care of our cats, dogs and other animal companions is so important to us.
Veterinary surgery is a respected profession with a long history in France, with regulation dating back to the 1880’s. Indeed, the world’s very first veterinary school was in Lyon, France opening way back in 1761.
There are surgeries located in towns and cities throughout the country; so, if you are looking for a vet for your pet in France, here are a few tips.
- Which vet? Ask for recommendations from neighbours or friends living locally. If there is a choice of more than one veterinary surgery, this is particularly useful. Visit the surgery to check that it is clean, offers a friendly welcome and you are sure that it will be comfortable for your pet.
- Understand the cost of treatments. Generally, the cost of consultations and veterinary treatments is lower than compared to the UK. Ask for the price of the different treatments if you are unsure. Don’t forget also that your pet requires annual vaccinations and protection against ticks and fleas.
- If you travel to the UK with your pet, the law is changing. From 1 January 2021 the EU pet passports will no longer be recognised. This means that you will need to contact your vet 4 months before travelling to get the latest advice regarding rabies vaccination and other requirements. Go to the gov.uk site for more information.
