Consuming less; spending less

Consuming less; spending less

You would like to change the way you consume and spend less in the process? Here are a few tips to help you along the way which will not only help you save money, but allow you to do your bit towards saving the planet and being more environmentally friendly.

Focus on local and seasonal produce

  • Choose local, seasonal produce; you will soon see that it is much healthier and cheaper than buying produce that has come from the other side of the world.
  • Buy in bulk; this is not possible for everything you may want to purchase but you will save money and reduce what you waste when purchasing rice, pasta, quinoa, lentils, hazelnuts and almonds for example. You will find that in many bio shops bulk buying is possible.
  • Avoid waste; by getting your hands on the fruit and veg unsold once the market is over.

Check your kitchen cupboards regularly for items you had forgotten you had purchased; you may be surprised of the meal that you can put together!

Public Transport and Car Sharing

Having a car is practical but can be expensive and sometimes result in high pollution emissions for the planet. Why not think about taking public transport to and from work for example to lessen your costs. Less will be spent on petrol and at the same time you will be reducing the harmful emissions produced by your car.

If public transport is not for you think about car sharing. Ask your workmates who come from the same area as you what they think and start taking it in turns to make the drive back and to work.

Second Hand Goods and Renting Out

Instead of buying a hand-drill which will only be used a couple of times a year why not rent one out?

It’s economical and results in you not taking up room in a cupboard for something that you are unlikely to use in the future! Consult the tool rental site and find a wide variety of tools to rent.

You may also be interested in buying 2nd hand clothes or furniture. Personalise them to suit your tastes and once again give your purse strings a rest!
